IOF Problem Resolution
Problem A08
Previous Next
Description The MAINT command RECEIVE function fails with IKJ56893I DATA SET NOT ALLOCATED error message.

Background The RECEIVE function of the MAINT command reads and unterses the IOF Cumulative Fix (CFX) file into a temporaty PDS. The error is occuring while attempting to allocate the temporary PDS.

The MAINT dialog uses the LISTDSI TSO command to get UNIT, VOLSER, and SMS attributes of the CFX file. The temporary data set allocate is attempted using these attributes. Therefore the temporary PDS should have the same SMS characteristics as the CFX file.

SMS can specify that the data set can go on multiple volumes. But a PDS is not permitted to span volumes.

The complete message you will see is:

IKJ56893I DATA SET your.dsname NOT ALLOCATED+ IGD17293I DATA SET your.dsname HAS PARTITIONED ORGANIZATION AND IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO BE A MULTI-VOLUME DATA SET, ALLOCATION FAILED VFIX1 ** RC 12 on line # 753 "ALLOC new fi(OUTFILE) dir(50) space(30 5)",

Solution Move the cumulative fix file (CFX file) to an SMS type that can not span multiple volumes. Then rerun the MAINT RECEIVE function.
